A Look into Leading Operations: Colleague Spotlight on Edward Rivera

At Abzena, operational excellence is not just a standard — it is part of our culture, built every day by people who care deeply about the work and the patients it ultimately serves. Our latest colleague spotlight features Edward Rivera, Head of Operations at Abzena’s Bristol, PA, bioconjugate development and manufacturing facility. Ed is a leader whose career reflects a foundational belief that the strongest organizations are built from the ground up, through discipline, people, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way.

Ed shares, “My role is centered on strengthening our GMP foundation, developing high-performing teams, and building the systems, discipline, and culture that allow people to succeed. By elevating capability, accountability, and operational excellence, we can better serve our customers and help deliver innovative bioconjugate medicines to the patients who depend on them.”

From the Manufacturing Floor to Head of Operations

Ed’s career began on the manufacturing floor, and that foundation has shaped a leadership philosophy grounded in respect for execution and the frontline teams who make it possible. From his earliest days as an operator, his focus was on mastering the craft, understanding process, and recognizing the profound responsibility that comes with producing medicines that matter to patients.

“My career began on the manufacturing floor, where I learned that excellence is built in the small moments, discipline when no one is watching, respect for process, and pride in doing the work the right way every time.”

Over time, that foundation gave way to broader responsibilities — managing processes, developing people, and shaping culture, strategy, and organizational performance. Each role expanded his perspective without ever diminishing his respect for those closest to the work. It was that journey, from operator to senior leader, that made the opportunity at Abzena so compelling. The chance to help build something meaningful at an important moment in the company’s growth — to strengthen the Bristol site, develop high-performing teams, and contribute to a more impactful market position — was one he recognized as too significant to pass up.

“Every role expanded my perspective, but I never lost respect for the frontline teams who turn plans into reality. They taught me that the strongest leaders stay connected to the work and elevate those around them.”

Leading Operations at the Bristol Site

As Head of Operations, Ed’s role centers on ensuring the Operations organization performs at the highest level while building the capabilities required for sustainable growth. That means setting direction, aligning priorities, and creating a structure that allows teams to execute with excellence across safety, quality, delivery, compliance, and customer service.

A significant part of his work involves leading transformation, strengthening systems, developing talent, and driving a culture in which accountability and high performance are the standard rather than the exception. Working closely with cross-functional leaders to remove constraints, accelerate decision-making, and bring the discipline and agility required in a highly competitive industry is central to the role. But ultimately, his responsibility extends beyond day-to-day activity. It is about building an Operations organization that can scale, differentiate itself in the market, and deliver work that creates meaningful impact for Abzena’s customers and patients around the world.

“Ultimately, my responsibility is larger than managing daily activity. It is to help build an Operations organization that can scale, lead, and differentiate itself in the market, while delivering work that has a meaningful impact on our customers and patients around the world.”

What Makes Abzena’s Work So Compelling

What stands out most to Ed about working at Abzena is the opportunity to help build something that can genuinely stand apart in the market. The field of bioconjugation and complex manufacturing is one where science is advancing quickly, customer expectations are high, and operational excellence can become a true competitive advantage. That kind of environment demands strong people, strong systems, and a culture that refuses to settle for average.

The importance of the work itself is equally motivating for him. In complex manufacturing, the margin for error is small, and the stakes are significant. The precision, discipline, and urgency required are not abstract standards — they reflect a direct responsibility to customers who depend on Abzena and to patients who ultimately wait for the medicines this industry helps bring forward. For Ed, Abzena represents the chance to help shape an organization that can compete at the highest level by combining science, GMP discipline, speed, quality, and strong execution.

“For me, Abzena represents a chance to help shape a site and an organization that can compete at a higher level. The companies that will win in this space are the ones that can combine science, GMP discipline, speed, quality, and strong execution. That is the kind of organization we are building, and that is what excites me most.”

Life Beyond the Bristol Site

Outside of Abzena, family is the center of Ed’s life. Faith, reading, training, and ongoing personal growth round out the priorities that matter most to him beyond the workplace.

A loyal Cleveland Browns fan, Ed has developed patience and resilience over years of what can only be described as character-building Sundays — whether that reflects loyalty or poor decision-making, he says, remains an open question. His love of reading, particularly John Grisham, is complemented by a current pursuit of something more structured: studying for the LSAT to enter law school. For Ed, learning in any form is a lifelong commitment, whether in leadership, law, operations, or personal development, he believes we should always be reaching toward the next version of who we can become.

“For me, learning is a lifelong commitment. Whether it is leadership, law, operations, or personal growth, I believe we should always be stretching ourselves toward the next version of who we are capable of becoming.”

Advice for Those Considering a Career in Operations

For anyone considering a role in Operations within the pharmaceutical CDMO industry, Edward’s advice is clear and hard-earned:

“Start by respecting the floor. Learn the process, understand GMP expectations, and listen to the people closest to the work. The strongest Operations leaders understand execution because they have taken the time to learn what excellence looks like where the work is actually done.” Leadership, Edward emphasizes, does not begin in a conference room.

“Develop a mindset of relentless ownership. Customers move quickly, timelines are demanding, and the stakes are high. Excuses have little value. Learn to solve problems, make sound decisions under pressure, communicate clearly, and bring calm to difficult situations. Organizations advance when leaders create solutions, not noise.

Lead people the right way. Kindness and accountability must coexist. Hold high standards, give direct feedback, develop others, and create an environment where people feel both respected and expected to perform. The best leaders, Edward believes, do not lower the bar — they help others rise to meet it.”

And above all,  “remember that this industry is bigger than schedules, metrics, or production targets. Behind every project is a customer with urgency and a patient waiting for hope. For those who stay humble, keep learning, outwork complacency, and commit to excellence, Operations can become one of the most meaningful careers they will ever pursue.”

Ed’s journey is a testament to what is possible when talent, discipline, and purpose come together in the right environment. At Abzena, our Operations teams are at the heart of everything we do, and we are always looking for driven individuals who are ready to make a meaningful impact.
