We have an exciting new opportunity in our rapidly growing partner research organisation in the drug development sector.  As Principal Scientist II, Immunology within our Bioassay team in Cambridge (UK) you will be responsible for driving innovation in our immunogenicity assessment service area, ensuring Abzena’s industry leading excellence in the field.

Abzena provides the most complete set of solutions in integrated discovery to mid-phase biotherapeutic and ADC drug development services in the pharmaceutical industry. Working with a diverse range of customers from academic groups, small biotech and big pharma on a diverse range of drug types from antibodies, fusion proteins and bioconjugates, Abzena supports the development and manufacture of better treatments for patients.

This role will work in partnership with multiple stakeholders including our Senior Director, Bioassays Director, Immunology and CSO to strengthen Abzena’s position as a leader in immunogenicity services. Your key responsibility will be to drive the continuous improvement and new developments in methods, technologies and equipment that support in silico, in vitro and ex vivo immunogenicity and safety assessment, with the aim to improve the overall workflows of the group and the value that we offer our customers. You will ensure high scientific standards of the immunogenicity service lines, and drive troubleshooting efforts for complex challenges. You will have the opportunity to interact with clients and lead projects requiring a high level of scientific expertise, such as development of bespoke immunology assays for different immunomodulatory activities. You will act as an expert in the immunogenicity & safety service area both with our customers and internal stakeholders and represent your area of expertise at international conferences, webinars and similar forums.

The ideal candidate will be expected to have:

  • Ideally a PhD or BSc/MSc with relevant experience in immunology.
  • At least 5-8 years relevant R&D experience, preferably in industry and most preferably from the service sector, in the field of immunology.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of immunology, ideally with working experience in immunogenicity assessment of biologics and/or vaccine development.
  • Experience with immune function and characterisation techniques such as blood processing, PBMC isolation, proliferation assays, flow cytometry, cytokine analysis (e.g., Luminex), ELISpot/FluoroSpot, fluorescence microscopy, co-culture assays, tumour cell killing assays, assessment of T-cell, DC, macrophage, neutrophil function.
  • Experience in vaccine development and/or assessment of B-cell function and or ADA, NAb assays is a major advantage.
  • Understanding of where current trends are in the pharmaceutical sector, ‘hot’ immunomodulatory therapeutic areas.
  • Good understanding of industry practices, such as regulatory requirements, is an advantage.
  • Proactive and independent, with a high level of autonomy and initiative.
  • Able to present data in a clear and concise manner to large external audiences, and to produce documents to a high standard.
